Tamil Nadu has launched the Singappen Task Force, an all-women police unit led by IG K. Bhavaneeswari, equipped with drones and body cameras. Backed by ₹354 crore and 2,500 posts sanctioned by Vijay, the initiative focuses on women and child safety amid praise and criticism over its effectiveness and intent.
Tamil Nadu has launched an all-women police unit named the Singappen Task Force with the objective of strengthening the safety of women and children across the state.
The force will be led by Inspector General K. Bhavaneeswari and will operate with the support of drone patrols, body cameras, and rapid response teams deployed across multiple regions of Tamil Nadu to enhance surveillance and emergency intervention capabilities.
Vijay has sanctioned a budget allocation of ₹354 crore along with approval for 2,500 positions for the initiative. He has also pledged strict punishment for individuals posing threats to women and has linked such crimes to drug abuse as part of the broader enforcement approach.
The initiative has received public appreciation from actor Kamal Haasan, who described it as a step toward empowerment. However, critics have raised concerns, describing the launch event as overly promotional and questioning whether the initiative introduces new resources or merely restructures existing patrol units under a new identity.
The Singappen Task Force represents a significant administrative measure aimed at reinforcing law enforcement capabilities and improving the response framework for crimes affecting women and children across Tamil Nadu.
